“Castaway”
Standing in the middle
Of the plains flat intersection
Fenced pastures in every direction
And rural power poles to the horizon...
Map in hand he stares
East to West and Canada to Mexico
As the blue sky emptiness overwhelms him
With “just keep breathing” possibilities...
My soul opens in tears
As the scene beckons
To buried yearnings
For something far away...
The camera pans 360 degrees
Around the distances
Coming to rest on his face
And the new knowing eyes...
After all this time
He will start again
To breathe in life’s warmth
And taste its sweetness...
Every moment is a lifetime
And every lifetime but a moment
No promises or guarantees
Only this stepping journey...
Between two eternities
Senses constantly searching
Through our cacophony
For dreams imagined...
He sits in the dusty car
And as the engine starts
The movie fades to black
As we both choose new roads.
